Wingless Free Market

Chicken wing prices have apparently soared and I didn’t know it. My local delivery pizza/wing place changed menu and prices New Year’s and I wasn’t privy when I ordered 50 wings (REAL wings, more later). I asked the total and my jaw dropped. The call ended and I gathered my wits and looked at the menu prices and thought, “how could the price go from $70 to $90 even with inflation? And no, rightwingnuts, its not taxes or burdensome, job-killing regulations. I called the restaurant back to ask about the price and she said chicken wings were through the roof expensive. They LOST money on chicken wings.

So, like any curious person, I googled the issue. Lo and behold, wings had been ugraded in value by the free, and let me add STUPID, market! Everybody needs to have wings now. So much so that this previous waste product best added to chicken soup or cat food mixes, now out-values chicken breast. SO MUCH so that chicken breast cut into chicken wing sized chunks is now billed (pardon the pun) as “boneless chicken wings”.

I had always wondered in my 2yrs earlier mind (not to be confused with a 2 yr old mind) WHY “boneless chicken wings” could possibly be less expensive than traditional chicken wings. “Traditional” meaning the thing you expect by the word you are using. (wink wink to Chik-fil-A and marriage, chicken and politics entwined)

ALL of the chain restaurants must now have chicken wings on their menu. This low-grade, trailer-trash gourmand making of a toss-away piece of an individual’s bodily flesh (let’s not forget what we are eating) started to turn top dollar... maybe akin to shark fins, for what those ordering it perceived they were getting. But then, the “american stupidity” of getting slabs of “boneless” chicken breast as “wings” turned freaking CHICKEN BREAST (excuse my shouting but) CHICKEN BREAST into a lower commodity value than freaking ACTUAL CHICKEN WINGS (again, please do pardon my shouting. I get very excited these days).

Am I out of my goddamned mind here or is there SOMETHING seriously, and I mean SERIOUSLY, WRONG with the “free market” economy when chicken wings are valued so much higher than the rest of the chicken... to the point that ignorant, dumbass consumers can actually make “boneless chicken wings” an option as a cheaper value beacuse they ARE NOT FREAKING WINGS?

I must be going out of my New York state of mind because I am crazy with this thought. SOMETHING is SERIOUSLY freaking WRONG. Complexity Theory tells us MANY things are WRONG with a species trying to improve itself. I continue to observe and participate, agape.
